The Canadian Shield places No. 4 on The Globe and Mail’s third-annual ranking of Canada’s Top Growing Companies

WATERLOO, ON - The Canadian Shield is pleased to announce that it placed No. 4 on the 2021 Report on Business ranking of Canada’s Top Growing Companies. As one of the largest manufacturers of made-in-Canada PPE, The Canadian Shield is proud of this amazing accomplishment and honoured to be included alongside some of the best and brightest companies in the country.

In just 18 months, the new but highly accomplished company has produced tens of millions of units of PPE, designed a state-of-the-art advanced automation and vision system for medical mask production, filed several patents, and most recently, introduced a biodegradable medical-grade face mask to the Canadian market.

“I'm very proud of our team for being named one of Canada’s Top Growing Companies, and thankful for all of the people that have supported us along the way to get here. This journey has been nothing short of incredible and we have lots more in store. This fall, we’re going to do everything we can to make Rapid Tests accessible and affordable to all Canadians to help stop this fourth wave in its tracks” says Founder and CEO Jeremy Hedges.

The Canadian Shield was originally founded by parent-company InkSmith Ltd. to respond to an urgent shortage of face shields for frontline workers and healthcare providers at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. After producing more than 16 million reusable face shields and tens of millions of medical-grade face masks, the company is proud to have donated almost 2 million units of PPE during that time. These donations included 750,000 face shields to educators across Canada, tens of thousands of face shields and medical-grade masks to various organizations in need, and most recently, 1 million face shields to help support healthcare workers in Africa through the Hope & Healing International organization.

Commenting on the future of The Canadian Shield after COVID19, Hedges says, “Looking beyond the pandemic, our team will work with government to deploy our innovative technologies to create a failsafe National Emergency Stockpile for critical PPE that will provide complete assurance going forward to frontline healthcare workers that they will always be protected".

Launched in 2019, the Canada’s Top Growing Companies editorial ranking aims to celebrate entrepreneurial achievement in Canada by identifying and amplifying the success of growth-minded, independent businesses in Canada. It is a voluntary program; companies had to complete an in-depth application process in order to qualify. In total, 448 companies earned a spot on this year’s ranking.

The full list of 2021 winners, and accompanying editorial coverage, is published in the October issue of Report on Business magazine—out now—and online.

“As we look toward the future, Canada’s Top Growing Companies offer both inspiration and practical insights for other firms facing similar challenges,” says James Cowan, Editor of Report on Business magazine. “The entrepreneurs behind these companies are smart, tenacious and unwavering in their commitment to their goals.”

“Any business leader seeking inspiration should look no further than the 448 businesses on this year’s Report on Business ranking of Canada’s Top Growing Companies,” says Phillip Crawley, Publisher and CEO of The Globe and Mail. “Their growth helps to make Canada a better place, and we are proud to bring their stories to our readers.”
